British Values

Being Part of Britain

At Warren Wood, we are proud of the different backgrounds and cultures of all our children and families. Our school vision is “Together we learn. Together we thrive,” and we work hard to include and celebrate everyone.

We are also proud to be part of Britain. This means we enjoy and learn about special British traditions and events during the year. These include things like the Harvest Festival in the autumn, Christmas, Remembrance Day, VE Day, and the King’s Birthday. We also learn about different world religions in our RE lessons, helping us understand and respect others.

Democracy (Having a Say)

Everyone at Warren Wood — pupils, teachers, and parents — gets a chance to share their ideas. This is called democracy, and it’s a big part of our school.

One way we do this is with our School Council. Every class chooses two children to be part of the council. Just like voting in real life, we think about who would be a good leader, and we vote in secret using ballot boxes.

The School Council meets to talk about school ideas and helps make decisions. They’ve helped with things like:

  • The school uniform
  • Our school logo
  • The sensory garden
  • How to use money from donations

The Council also helps choose new staff and gives feedback on special themed weeks.

Other ways children have a voice include:

  • Helping make class rules
  • Giving feedback on lessons
  • Planning charity events and fundraisers

Children are always listened to and heard. We are taught to listen to each other and to respect everyone’s opinion. We are also encouraged to take charge of our learning and be responsible for ourselves and our school.

The Rule of Law (Following Rules)

Rules are very important in school and in life. At the start of the school year, every class helps make their own class rules so everyone feels safe and ready to learn.

We learn that laws and rules are there to protect us and help us live together safely. We also learn about what happens if rules are broken.

We think about rules in:

  • Assemblies and behaviour talks
  • Visits from the police or firefighters
  • RE lessons, when learning about rules in religions
  • PE lessons, where we follow game and sport rules

Individual Liberty (Making Choices)

At Warren Wood, we believe children should have freedom to make choices and share their thoughts and beliefs — as long as it's done safely and respectfully.

We help children learn to make good choices, for example:

  • Choosing how to do a task or activity
  • Choosing how to show their learning
  • Choosing extra clubs and activities

We teach children about their rights and freedoms, and how to stay safe, especially online and in personal development lessons.

Mutual Respect (Being Kind and Fair)

We celebrate different backgrounds and beliefs at Warren Wood.

Respect is one of our most important school values. Everyone at school is expected to:

  • Treat others with kindness
  • Take care of school property
  • Respect everyone’s differences

We talk about how our actions can affect others. We all try our best to show respect every day, through our school values: Aspiration, Respect, Connection.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs (Celebrating differences)

We learn about different religions and cultures through RE, PSHE, art, stories, and other subjects. We explore the traditions, beliefs, and celebrations from around the world.

We also enjoy celebrating special days like:

  • Ramadan and Eid
  • Chinese New Year
  • And other festivals and holidays throughout the year

This helps us learn that even though people may be different, we can all get along and celebrate together.
